Our businesses
Cook Group companies operate across five areas of focus. Our family of businesses shares our core values, but each business operates independently of the Cook Group. If you have an interest in any of our businesses, we invite you to connect with them directly.
Our founders
In 1963, Bill and Gayle Cook created a small company that manufactured three simple medical devices used to treat patients less invasively than common surgical techniques of the time. That small company grew into Cook Medical, with manufacturing locations on three continents and delivering products to more than 135 countries.
Along the way, this entrepreneurial family branched out into other areas of business – to explore new types of medical tre atment, to support passions like historic preservation, and to support a growing group of employees and the communities where they live.
Cook Group was created to provide support and oversight to the Cook companies, which remain family owned.
Latest news
Cook Group sells former GE facility property to Simtra BioPharma Solutions
Bloomington, Ind. — Cook Group has signed a purchase agreement to sell the former GE manufacturing facility on Curry Pike to Simtra Biopharma Solutions (Simtra). This transaction sets the stage for productive future use of the property and continued economic momentum in the Bloomington community.
There are two parcels of land that make up the entirety of the GE facility property. Cook will be retaining the western parcel, which includes the supplementary parking lot for Cook employees, as well as the large retention pond, green space, future development areas, and walking paths. The other parcel will be sold to Simtra. No jobs will be impacted as part of this transaction, and the deal successfully closed on July 24.
Simtra has a long history of manufacturing sterile injectable products at its Bloomington facility, which is located near its newly purchased property on Curry Pike.
“This purchase is a key part of our global growth strategy to expand capacity for advanced injectable medicines and meet the growing demand in the United States,” says Raymond Guidotti, Chief Operating Officer, Simtra BioPharma Solutions. “It positions us to bring critical manufacturing capabilities closer to our customers, support innovation in areas like oncology, and strengthen our ability to bring vital injectable products to our customers’ patients worldwide.”
Cook originally purchased the property and the former GE facility in 2017 with the intent of using it for both professional and manufacturing space. However, the COVID pandemic drastically changed Cook’s needs for physical space. During the pandemic, the company reconfigured the current buildings to allow for growth in its manufacturing space. As a result, Cook hasn’t had a critical need for this space for several years. As Cook sells the space, the funds will be reinvested into the business, allowing the company to focus on optimized manufacturing and certain product portfolios.
“This in no way signals a change to our presence or commitment to the community,” said Pete Yonkman, president of Cook Group and Cook Medical. “This transfer will be good for the community, the local economy and the life sciences industry here in Bloomington. We are happy to see it go to a company that is also focused on innovation in healthcare.”

A message from Cook
This is a painful time in our country. It’s unfathomable that tragedies such as the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery continue to happen. Sadly, as people of color know all too well, they do happen every day. To all people of color in our Cook family and broader community: we stand with you and we support you. We also want to do more than offer words of support and comfort. We want to be part of the solution.
Our Cook Group purpose statement says that we exist to help people and communities reach their full potential. We take that seriously. In the past, that has meant helping small communities, like Bloomington, Indiana and Canton, Illinois, avoid economic downturn. Today, that purpose means building pathways to upward mobility, personal growth, and career fulfillment for the most vulnerable people in our community.
In the past few years, we have put particular emphasis on programs that remove barriers to education, jobs, and housing. We have made it possible for people to join Cook and earn a high-school diploma at the same time. Our employees can get free academic degrees up to a master’s degree. We’re working on affordable housing in the French Lick and West Baden communities. We have partnered with local organizations focused to bring career opportunities to those experiencing homelessness, substance use disorder, or who are transitioning out of prison.
We’re proud of the work we’ve done so far, but moving forward we will do more.
First, our efforts in the past have reached parts of our communities, but we have not been intentional about supporting African Americans and people of color specifically. We will do better at that in the future.
Second, a lot of our work in these areas has been focused in Indiana, where our headquarters is located and where we have the most resources and the longest-standing relationships. That will also change. Our expectation is that moving forward, no matter where we have a facility or a Cook presence, we are deeply connected with and committed to all of our communities.
Racism has no place at Cook. It does not align with our values, our purpose, or our business. We promise to listen and do whatever we can to improve our ability to serve people and our communities.

Cook Group donates land to local fire department
Mike Baker, Barb Ooley, Jim Murphy, Nikki Gastineau, Matt Bright, and Joel Bomgardner hold renderings of the future fire station.
Bloomington, Ind. – Today, Cook Group announced a two-acre land donation to the Washington Township fire department. The land will become home to a new fire station that will service the area west of the I-69 expansion.
“When I-69 is complete, the current Fire Station #5 won’t be able to quickly and easily service those on the west side of the road,” said Barbara Ooley, Washington Township Trustee. “This property will allow us to greatly enhance emergency services to a large part of our residents.”
The deed to the land donation was signed on Wednesday.
“When you are a part of a community, it’s important to give back – in many different ways,” said Jim Murphy, president of CFC Properties, a Cook Group company. “We’re happy to donate land we owned to support our local fire departments. This donation is the first step in moving this new fire station closer to reality.”
In addition to land, Cook donated engineering and architectural services for the future fire department.

Cynthia Kretz receives honor for leading female general counsels
Bloomington, Ind. – Cynthia Kretz, vice president and general counsel at Cook Group, was honored for her excellence in the legal field as a part of this year’s Shirley’s Legacy award on September 21.
Barnes & Thornburg hosted its third-annual ceremony in honor of Shirley Shideler, the first woman to be president of the Indiana Bar Foundation. Kretz was one of five women recognized for her trailblazing spirit and outstanding accomplishments. They were applauded for cultivating and mentoring the next generation of female and minority leaders.
“It’s an honor to be recognized and there is a responsibility that comes with it,” said Kretz. “It is important that we continue to mentor and support young women in the legal field. I have been blessed throughout my career to have mentors who have guided me. As in any profession, there is true value in nurturing the careers of young lawyers as they continue to grow in their field.”
As Cook’s vice president and general counsel, Kretz leads global operations of the legal department as well as directing representation in court. Prior to her nine years with Cook Group, she worked for Wabash National. It was there that she formed their legal department and would later operate as vice president general counsel and secretary to the board of directors.
“Cynthia has been an integral member of our leadership team for the past nine years,” said Pete Yonkman, president of Cook Group and CookMedical. “It’s no surprise to me that she’s being recognized for her accomplishments. She sets an outstanding example for future leaders in our organization.”
Cook Group is proud to congratulate Cynthia Kretz on this honor as she continues to be a leader in her field and her community.

Cook Group announcement expands life sciences industry in Bloomington
Bloomington, Ind. – Today, two Cook Group announcements mark significant, positive changes for the future of Bloomington. First, Cook Group and Catalent, Inc. announced a purchase agreement for Catalent (NYSE: CTLT) to purchase Cook Pharmica. In addition, Cook Group, through its subsidiary Cook Properties, has signed an agreement to purchase the former GE site near Cook’s world headquarters on Bloomington’s west side.
“Both of these decisions will have a positive impact on our employees, our business and also on the local economy and workforce – creating new jobs, expanding the local life sciences industry, and attracting new talent to our region,” said Pete Yonkman, president of Cook Group and Cook Medical. “Today, more than ever, we are committed to Bloomington. It’s our home.”
Cook Group and Catalent enter into purchase agreement for Cook Pharmica
Cook Pharmica at sunrise
“We only consider opportunities like this when it clearly benefits the patients we serve, our employees, the community, and both companies,” said Yonkman. “In this case, we feel confident that this is a good decision for all involved, including the more than 750 Cook Pharmica employees whose jobs are all secure. All of those employees will become part of Catalent’s growing biologics business and remain under the leadership of Cook Pharmica’s president, Tedd Green.”
With Cook Pharmica’s available space and expertise, Catalent will create a biologics development and manufacturing center of excellence. The purchase allows Cook Pharmica to deepen relationships with customers and grow their already successful business.
“This purchase is a recognition of the hard work, dedication, and community spirit of the men and women who have helped Cook Pharmica to grow. The Bloomington area has been a terrific home for this fast-growing business, and we look forward to further strengthening Cook Pharmica’s partnership with the community in the years to come,” said John Chiminski, president and CEO of Catalent.
Catalent plans to invest aggressively in Cook Pharmica, and in the rest of the Catalent Biologics network to build a true global leader in the biologics market, which will help Catalent to improve the lives of patients around the world.
The completion of the $950 million transaction is subject to customary closing conditions, including approval from regulatory authorities, and is expected to occur in the fourth quarter of this calendar year.
Vacant GE building
Cook Group purchase of former GE site
Cook Group is expanding its medical device business and reaffirming its commitment to Bloomington by signing a purchase agreement for the vacant GE property on Curry Pike. This purchase allows Cook the flexibility to address some immediate space needs at Cook Medical’s global headquarters and to more quickly address future goals to modernize its manufacturing process for increased efficiency. Over the next 10 years, if market growth continues as planned, Cook Group expects to add 500 jobs in Bloomington at this new facility and its Daniels Way location.
“We need more space to accommodate our growth and to enable us to expedite modernization and transformation of our manufacturing process. The flexibility that the GE space provides will allow us to purpose build for efficiency in our production lines,” said Yonkman. “The GE site is one of the only existing buildings in Bloomington that can meet our needs, and its close proximity to our global headquarters allows us to expand our west side campus.”
The former GE site was built over 50 years ago to manufacture refrigerators. The last refrigerator came off the line at that facility in August 2016 when GE Appliances closed the Bloomington plant. With a history of revitalizing once-vacant buildings, Cook Group plans to invest in the property so it will once again be a source of pride for the community.
The completion of the purchase is subject to certain conditions, including inspections of the property and finalization of agreements with the City of Bloomington and Monroe County, and is expected to occur in the fourth quarter of this calendar year.

Cook Group and RecycleForce Partner for record breaking community electronic disposal day
253,756 pounds of E-waste to be recycled and used to support Indianapolis based social venture organization focused on reentry programs and job training.
Bloomington, Ind. – On Saturday, April 28, Cook Group partnered with RecycleForce to host a community electronic disposal day that gave Bloomington area residents and small businesses an opportunity to recycle their unused electronic appliances, devices and televisions. RecycleForce is an organization that helps formerly incarcerated individuals rebuild their lives through workforce training, development, and job placement in their recycling facility. Cook and RecycleForce partnered for the event because the organizations believe in breaking down the barriers to employment that hold people back and creating a cleaner environment.
253,756 pounds of e-waste collected at event
“Saturday was the biggest one-day recycling event for RecycleForce,” said RecycleForce President, Gregg Keesling. “We thank Cook for giving citizens a chance to dispose of their unwanted and outdated electronics, and for giving RecycleForce an opportunity to collect resources that will help us continue the job training and educational services we provide people as they reenter society.”
The event, sponsored by Cook, saw hundreds of residents’ turnout and drop off over 250,000 pounds of E-Waste. RecycleForce will disassemble the electronics at their facility in Indianapolis and use the proceeds of the recycled products to fund the organization’s comprehensive reentry programs helping the formerly incarcerated individuals reenter the workforce.
“We partnered with RecycleForce to bring this event to our community and also bring awareness to the life-changing workforce training that the organization provides to individuals reentering the workforce,” said Pete Yonkman, president of Cook Group and Cook Medical. “We are thrilled with the response from the community and we appreciate everyone who waited in line to recycle. To say we were overwhelmed by the turn out would be an understatement.”

Cook Group operating during COVID-19
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Cook companies have worked hard to protect employee health and safety while continuing business operations and customer service.
Some Cook companies have had to scale back operations, put significant policy changes in place, and rethink how we work. As the world adjusts to this new normal, we want to share our plans for moving forward.
The COVID-19 corporate operations plan describes the changes we’ve made during the pandemic to protect employee health and safety while ensuring our ability to serve customers and patients. It also acknowledges that many of these adjustments will need to continue into the future as we adapt to a new normal.
The plan includes details on COVID-19 policies and procedures, including:
- HR leave policies
- Onsite illness management
- Personal protective equipment
- Cleaning and sanitization in facilities
- Physical distancing
- Remote work guidelines and return to worksite planning
We are providing our plans for operations in this new environment to employees and the public. A downloadable overview of how we are approaching our operations as a company can be found here: Cook Group Operations Plan. Downloadable resources referenced in the plan can be found below.
Cook Group recently hosted a community webinar via Facebook Live to share what we’ve learned in the variety of businesses that we operate – resorts, commercial properties, and medical device manufacturing, and more.
Cook Group shares COVID-19 lessons and offers knowledge and time from volunteers to help local businesses
Bloomington, Ind. – As we all adjust to a new post-coronavirus world and begin to open businesses back up, Cook Group wants to give back to the community by offering knowledge and time from volunteers.
One way that Cook Group wants to contribute to community recovery is by facilitating a volunteer program to share their experiences and response to COVID-19. With specialties in areas such as HR, engineering, and IT management, these employees at Cook Group have volunteered to support local business as they open back up their operations.
“Whether you’re a small business owner or the CEO of a global company, we’ve all been affected by the COVID-19 crisis. If we can share our time and our knowledge, then maybe that will provide a foundation for others as they re-open their businesses and face the new normal,” said Yonkman. “Cook employees are always willing to help and we are excited about this opportunity. Our communities have supported us, and this is one way we want to give back.”
Another way that Cook contributed to recovery efforts was with a free public webinar earlier today. Shared via Facebook Live, the webinar gave other businesses in the community a blueprint as they return to operations in the new, post-COVID-19 world. The webinar was hosted by a panel of Cook Group leaders who shared what the organization has learned so that other business leaders can benefit from the business continuity plans that Cook has developed to protect its employees and customers. Some information shared in the webinar includes:
- HR policies created specifically to support employees’ different life situations during the pandemic
- Procedures for supporting an employee who becomes sick at work
- Advanced cleaning and sanitization procedures
- Ideas for creating safe public spaces and protecting customer interactions
- Materials such as phased return-to-worksite plans and remote work guidelines that other companies can adapt to their own needs
You can view the recorded Facebook Live webinar here. If you have any questions, would like to request materials mentioned in the webinar, or would like information on areas of expertise with a Cook Group volunteer, you can email Community@CookGroup.com.

First Patient Enrolled in Cook Regentec’s Clinical Trial of Investigational Therapy for Critical Limb Ischemia
Study sites are currently being evaluated for enrollment in the US, Canada and the EU
Indianapolis, Ind. – Cook Regentec today announced enrollment of the first patient in an international clinical trial evaluating the HemaTrate® Blood Filtration System to treat patients with critical limb ischemia (CLI) due to peripheral arterial disease (PAD). To treat CLI, the HemaTrate system produces an autologous, peripheral blood-derived total nucleated cell (TNC) concentrate for intramuscular injection into the ischemic limb.
“Critical limb ischemia is the final stage of peripheral arterial disease and is associated with major morbidity and mortality despite current medical and surgical treatment,” noted Professor Bijan Modarai, the study’s principal investigator, who treated the first enrolled patient at Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Hospital, King’s Health Partners, in London, UK. “Circulating nucleated cells are thought to stimulate vascular repair and regeneration and are of growing interest as a potential therapeutic option for these patients.”
HemaTrate® Blood Filtration System
The HemaTrate CLI (HT-CLI) trial is an international, randomized, controlled, multicenter study that will enroll up to 350 patients. Subjects with Rutherford class 4 or 5 CLI will be randomized to receive a series of three intramuscular injection treatments of TNCs or saline, six weeks apart. The primary endpoint is clinical benefit through 12-month follow-up, defined as freedom from reintervention, major amputation or death. Following the 12-month study period, all patients will be offered TNC treatment for both study and non-study limbs. Patients will be followed for a total of 24 months.
“Patients with PAD-associated CLI who are poor candidates for surgical or endovascular procedures require alternative treatment options that deliver improved long-term outcomes,” said Brad Shirley, business leader at Cook Regentec. “We are excited that patients enrolled in our global CLI trial will begin to receive HemaTrate as treatment for this often-devastating condition.”
Professor Bijan Modarai is a principal investigator of the HemaTrate CLI trial and is a paid consultant of Cook Regentec.
